Everyone is trying to be as conservative as they can with their electricity usage at the moment, after energy prices have soared in recent months. So, if you want to make the most of an oven that is already hot, why not use it to cook something else?

The public has been overwhelmed with news of sky-rocketing electricity costs, which is enough to put anyone off using their kitchen appliances entirely. However, we still need to cook and eat, which means using the oven, fridge, hob and kettle daily.

There are still ways to cut down on our usage though, including using a cooling oven. Mark Birchall, chef-patron of Moor Hall in Lancashire, told The Guardian readers that this is ideal for drying fresh herbs, which can then be used to flavour delicious meals.

He also recommended drying out bread that is past its best and putting this in a food processor to make tasty breadcrumbs.

Chef-owner of Belzan Sam Grainger also suggested using a cooling oven to make roasted tomatoes.

“Halve them, add salt and a little oil [so they don’t stick], and put in a cast-iron skillet or pan. Leave them in the hot oven until it’s cool, and they’ll get better and better the longer they’re in there,” he stated.

Cooling ovens are also ideal for cookies, helping to create biscuits that are “soft, gooey, warm – and perfect for after dinner”.

GBBO winner Nadiya Hussain makes use of a turned off oven in her recipe for chicken biryani, instructing cooks to cover the dish with foil and a lid and leaving it to steam in a warm oven for 20 minutes.
